D.C. Days: The Capital in Under 48 Hours

A big problem about catching the travel bug is being 22 and broke. A quick-fix solution for this is to keep your trips short and sweet. This sparked the two-day trip to Washington D.C. my boyfriend Nick and I took this fall. Luckily, we live within driving distance (about two and a half hours), which of course saves tons on travel costs! We got there on a Saturday morning and left by Sunday night, but had a awesome, activity packed two days in the nation’s capital. After sitting in traffic most of the morning I finally got into D.C. and met Nick (who was coming from school in Virginia) at The MadHatter. The restaurant was unsurprisingly decked out in all things Alice in Wonderland, but in an almost subtle way that wasn’t completely overwhelming. I didn’t feel like I was in Disneyland; instead there was an assortment of portraits and memorabilia of Alice and the gang along the wood-paneled walls, which I absolutely loved! After a waffle-filled and lovely brunch, we headed over to…

It’s OKAY to be a Tourist

My post today is all about being a tourist. I don’t know why but a lot of us see that word with negative connotations. We often picture dorky people with giant maps taking up the entire sidewalk, covered head to toe in I LOVE (insert popular city here) clothing and butchering the local language. Well, I am here to make you see the term tourist in not only a positive light, but as something we would aspire to be! Tourist: noun // A person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure. I’m not sure about you, but being a tourist sounds pretty damn nice to me. It means you are in a new place; you are out of your comfort zone and taking a daring adventure for the first time. There have been countless occasions, whilst on vacation, that I didn’t take a picture or feel comfortable filming just because I didn’t want to look like a tourist. There are so many amazing photos that would have been worth the…

Thank You NYC, For Making Me a Better Person

I usually avoid Times Square like carrots in my shrimp fried rice, but tonight I couldn’t help but stand here for a few minutes. I’ve learned a thing or two from the tourists I rush past. They’re so happy and in the moment, as they marvel at the big lights. It reminds me to be grateful for the opportunity to live and learn in this city. And although this past year has been rather tough, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. The patience I’ve gained is not only manifesting itself in waiting for the promises God made to me when I moved here, it is also manifesting itself in the way I’ve shown patience with those around me. Like showing kindness to a tourist struggling with her luggage, or treating a homeless man like he’s not invisible. So I guess I say all of this just to say thanks NYC, for making me a better person. —Tara Pook

New York! Visiting Lady Liberty!

HilaryStyle I’ve been to New York many times in the past 26 years and yet, until this past July I had never taken the time to visit the Statue of Liberty. I guess it was just something I always thought I’d do “next time”. Recently when thinking about places to take the boys within the United States Lady Liberty came to mind. She is after all one of America’s most well known symbols! Our trip to New York to celebrate my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary seemed like the perfect opportunity because as it turned out only one of us had ever been to Liberty Island before! While I am glad to say I finally “saw” the Statue of Liberty, I think once was enough for this group.  Neither of my boys loved the experience and Elliot gave it a 2 out of 10. There just wasn’t enough to hold his interest. My first impression… View original post 619 more words
