What it Feels Like For a Girl…

Originally posted on Picking the Day:
This has been a hard post to write, and not in the way most people might think when they catch on to the content. It’s been something that has been bubbling under the surface for quite some time, long before #MeToo and the Times Up movement, long before the Weinstein scandal and subsequent stories that have surfaced since. Longer than I can quite put my finger on. I’ve been wanting write something about it for a while, but I couldn’t find the words. When recent media stories exploded, I felt even more that I should write something, but still, the words eluded me. It’s taken me quite some time to understand what I wanted to say, months and months of deep thought and deliberation, and I still I can’t say I’m completely convinced that I’m going to manage to express quite how I feel, but as this week marks the 100 year anniversary of the Suffragette Movement, I feel the time is right to do my best to try…

Spring and Summer Races on Tap

Spring and summer without a doubt are my favorite seasons to train and race some shorter, faster races. So I have a few distances (including a couple of ultras) I plan on tackling within the next few months!! Here are a few items I have on my calendar, so far. –Cowtown 50k – Sunday, February 25th / Ft. Worth, Texas: Technically this one is still in the winter, but it is UP NEXT on the calendar. I am so excited to be PACING this race this year! As some of you know, last year I paced the marathon distance and this year I will be tackling the 50k (31 miles) Pacing is a whole different type of animal, but I’ve been fortunate to be able to pace various distances over the last several years. This will be the first time I’ve paced beyond 26.2 miles though. So, I’m very excited to be able to help some runners conquer their goals! And yeah, earn a glass of wine or 2 while I’m…

Glamping in Asheville

Since there are nonstop flights from Jacksonville to Asheville now, my friend Kristina flew to Asheville and I met her there. Since we were feeling adventurous, we decided in try glamping instead of staying in a hotel. I actually found Asheville Glamping because they had liked a picture of mine on Instagram. So we roamed the website and landed upon the Deluxe Belle Tent. If you aren’t sure what “glamping” is, we stayed in a tent that had AC, WIFI, a bed, tv, lights, etc. There was also a full bathroom next to the tent. Basically super fancy camping. I’m not sure what my expectations were, but this was a lot closer to camping then I thought it would be. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, but there were times where it was. Because it had rained…

The Groans of a Pregnant Working Mum

Originally posted on MiddleMe:
As I was working on the research of my article “Working and Pregnant at the Same Time”, I interviewed a number of pregnant working women all over the world. I found out that my first article did not bring out their workplace groans as I would love to do hence this article is a representation of their voices. Enjoy! “My boss is extremely supportive and in fact, she and I got pregnant at the same time! But when she cut short her maternity leave to come back to work, she had expressed explicitly that she hoped that I do the same. I didn’t but I felt so guilty when I went back to work.” Alice, 28, Fashion Buyer “I had the most evil boss ever. He made sure I do overtime even he knows I am in my third trimester and I am due in a month. He made me feel guilty for being pregnant. Fortunately for me, when I came back from my maternity leave, he was transferred to another…

The Reality of Freelance Writing

I guess I’m living the dream right now. After I left my boring office job four months ago,  I’ve been spending my time travelling the world. I’ve been to Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico and Amsterdam and am currently planning a trip to Romania and another trip from New York to California. This is what I have wanted to do ever since I can remember, and I now have the perfect job to go alongside it. I don’t have to choose between this job and travelling because I can work whilst travelling.

So I Met a Guy on the Plane…

Originally posted on Travel Bugg :
I met a man on a flight to Frankfurt, and I think it may change my life. We were crammed in seats so far back you couldn’t see the moist towelettes and eye pillows of first class,  browsing through movie selections and trying not to make awkward elbow advances across the center rest, when a man from India asked me what I was planning to do in Germany. “I’m actually flying on to Budapest,” I told him, struggling to open the package of pretzels that international flights still give for free.  “And then I’m driving from Hungary to Slovakia.” “That will be a nice weekend trip,” he said as if he boarded planes to Europe every day. “What will you do there?” “I’m doing an photojournalism internship.” The phrase felt foreign; I kept pinching my arm fat to make sure it was really happening. I’d stopped telling friends and acquaintances about the position, afraid it would turn out to be a joke. I asked the man where he was going,…

The Emotional Roller Coaster of Passion

Every project starts with excitement. Not those terrible assigned project that may require you to work with other people. Passion projects. It starts with excitement. You dive into the planning process. You hit a few bumps there, but you push forward and turn your research into reality. You work and werk on your blog, new business, or project of your choosing. You hit another bump or two, but you still manage to launch. Things are going well, then okay, then comes the monster bump.

It’s Not Because I’m Young

I’m a bleeding heart liberal in the heart of Texas. Typically I try to avoid serious political discussions, but sometimes they find me. Last week, I got much more combative than I normally do. Despite what the other person thinks, politics are not something I’ll “understand when I’m older.” I banter about political stuff with the older teacher next door to me all the time. It’s lighthearted, fun, and we are still friends despite being on polar opposite ends of the spectrum. The other day, another teacher joined in our banter. Within minutes, she had begun insulting me.
