always making new friends 😛 Happy New Year to all!! I went to Havana, Cuba with friends to ring in the New Year and I’m so happy I went! We had a really great group (very different from the solo travel I’ve done this year) but it’s always fun when you have a good crowd around you that’s enthusiastic about the same things as you. Havana was very inviting… we actually hired a driver for our stay which I definitely recommend doing. Ricardo made everything so simple and we kind of bonded with him. One night we realized one of our friends wasn’t actually in the car when we got to our next destination and our driver was so scared but we found her. haha. After that we joked with him about “counting all the chickens” when we got in the taxi. He was even nice enough to invite us over for New Year’s Eve celebrations with his family. A lot of expats and travelers in Southeast Asia like to rag on Singapore. They say it’s too clean, too orderly. It’s boring and polite and polished. Nothing but soft edges. But I’ve always thought criticisms like that said more about the person than the place. Singapore–like everywhere else in the world–is largely what you make of it. It’s a complex and complicated place, capable of being just about anything. Little India on a Sunday is chaotic and wonderful, with energy pulsating through the crowded streets. Chinatown fills up with old men playing chess and gossiping as they sit idly about. Hawker centers dish out world class cuisine day and night. Locals and tourists alike browse through the Gardens by the Bay and the old colonial promenades downtown, and at night restaurants, cocktail bars, speakeasies, and clubs all come alive until the early hours. After spending Thanksgiving in Pittsburgh, I have a few more travel tips for ya. (Just in case you didn’t get your fill from this one or this one.) Where to Stay: Hotel Monaco: This trendy spot is in a fun location downtown. It’s filled with whacky art, and if you’re there when the weather is accommodating, there’s a great rooftop bar. We had brunch at The Commoner on the lower level. It’s a fun place to grab a drink or make your own at the bloody mary bar. The Westin Convention Center: We stayed here the same night we went to the Penguins game, so it was quite convenient. (The weird reflective bean hanging thing pictured below is from their lobby.) What to Do: As I’ve said many times before, I love the Carnegie Museum of Art. This go-round, I got to talk to a parrot in the Hélio Oiticica exhibit. Surprise Trip to San Francisco

My husband surprised me with a trip to San Francisco last weekend to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. What better gift could a girl ask for?! Over the course of the weekend we ate, drank, and walked (51 miles) to our hearts’ content. We stayed at the Hotel Adagio. This little boutique feeling hotel is owned by Marriott. They were so sweet–giving us a room with a view and a bottle of wine on the house. (Note the giant tiger mural by Nychos. You’ve got a great view of it from there.) Our first stop was Lombard Street. You know, that bizarre crooked street that people actually drive down (amazingly without hitting the gaggles of tourists)? You have to love (and hate) the typography of San Francisco. It creates the most beautiful architectural reactions (and gives you hella blisters). Get a load of those giant wheels spinning cables below. That’s how the famous SF cable cars work. Але куди подінешся – час не питає дозволу йти собі далі. Лишається переглядати фото з відпустки і поринати в солодку ностальгію. Свою відпустку ми з чоловіком спланували ще весною, як і годиться завбачливим туристам,  –  заздалегідь  придбали квитки на літак (ми летіли іспанським лоукостом Iberia), забронювали готелі, визначилися з маршрутом подорожі та розробили детальну екскурсійну програму. Скажу наперед, що спочатку ми планували відвідати три місця – Барселону, Тоссу де Мар (бл. 100 км на північ від Барселони) і мальовничий Кадакес неподалік Франції (в цьому містечку жив і творив Сальвадор Далі разом зі своєю музою Галою, там же знаходиться його будинок-музей). Ідея щодо останнього народилася спонтанно після покупки аромату Sea & Sun in Cadaques Salvador Dali.  Щоб задовольнити цікавість з приводу містечка Кадакес, полізла у Вікіпедію, де й дізналась, що воно дуже красиве і атмосферне, з милими білосніжними будиночками. Chicago’s Air and Water Show was this past weekend–and it was fantastic as always. This year’s headliners were the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds the F-35 Heritage Flight. The show has been around for 57 years. Back then, the budget was only $88. I’d love to know what the total cost is now that Shell is footing the bill. There is nothing like watching some amazing stunts while gazing at the city that you love. ?

That being said, I am here until I leave for France (next week!!) and have been trying my hardest to see the best in everything. Sunrise, Emma and Mike set off every day at dawn Emma is taking a rest day tomorrow. We stop early today (early by Emma’s standards at this point means after 40km) and head north to Lichinga to check into a hotel where we can enjoy soft comfortable clean smelling beds, showers with plenty of warm water and privacy. We all still wake up by 5am the next day, which is a lie-in. This video is of Emma running through a village in Mozambique and in to her stopping point for the day. I like it because it gives a good feel of what the journey was like: Lichinga is a busy hot town and extra busy because it is Saturday. To get cash, I stand for hours in a long queue of people squashed together and overheating in the sun. It seems there are 10 people in each booth. Many people are getting money for other people. The queue barely moves. Happily, after a couple of hours Woocash discovers…

Cottony Clouds Over my Paradisaical Workplace

While out on my morning walk/jog, I chanced on this view and couldn’t help but marvel at the cloud-filled sky. Usually, our skies are just shades of blue with a scattering of cottony clouds here and there. Here’s a zoomed-in shot. I actually had to wade into the waters to take the above, but I had no regrets.  The scenery looked so pretty!  I even stopped my morning routine and just lounged around while enjoying the serene views. This one’s taken on the roadway fronting Galapagos Beach.  The clouds here weren’t so defined, but I loved how the palm trees reflected on the still lagoon waters. On my way back to my room, my view of a cloud-filled sky was just as pronounced from the back lobby. Photos taken at Plantation Bay Resort and Spa using a Samsung Galaxy Note 5, which by the way is now my favorite mobile camera because it takes photos in wider angles than my iPhone 6.
