Sort It Out: Creating A Capsule Wardrobe

Originally posted on A Venturing Girl:
Wardrobes can be frightening places if we let them. Sure, they’re just there to store your clothes, shoes, hats etc. But let’s be real, they’re so much more. Your wardrobe is the place you go first thing in the morning to choose what image you’re going to put out to the world. It’s the place where you know you’re comfy pj’s are waiting at the end of the long day. Or THAT dress when you’re getting ready to hit the town. Your wardrobe is – like your home and all of your possessions really – a reflection of how you view yourself. And at times we can look at our wardrobes with feelings of shame, disgust and – my personal favorite – crippling indecisiveness (this happens to me about once a month, ladies, you know). So what has my wardrobe been reflecting lately? Well, until recently, if you looked at my wardrobe, Brenda Fricker in Home Alone 2 probably would have sprung to mind. When I got home after New…

Simple in the City: Entertainment

Living in a small apartment in the city has some major perks, but entertaining can be tough when you only have a few square feet to spare. A typical Saturday at our apartment looks like this: sitting on the floor around the coffee table tossing game dice with six other people. Sometimes we pull together all of the chairs we can find (and chairs that friends bring) and squeeze to fit around our dining table. Most of us hold our drinks because there’s no table space available thanks to the extensive board games we like to play. We have one of the largest apartments in our group of friends (650 square feet), so we’re most often the gathering place. For as fun as it can be, it can get overwhelming. So how do you keep it simple when it comes to entertainment outside the apartment? Why it’s not always best to stay in My husband and I love our evenings together in the apartment. But, since I work from home all week and don’t usually have…

Simple in the City: Where to Live

Originally posted on Minimal Millennial:
Let’s get one thing straight right off the bat: cities aren’t all just cement and buildings, and rural areas aren’t all just cornfields or desert. There’s so much variation throughout every landscape that you can make just about anything out of just about anywhere. So once you decide where to live (there aso many great cities to choose from), you have to decide exactly where to live within that space. And if you’re looking to keep things simple, the cheapest area is not always the most ideal. So what should you look for in a city dwelling? Location This is honestly my top priority, especially in a city like Los Angeles. I know so many people with 45+ minute commutes each way – and it’s not a peaceful one, either. It may take some fancy financial footwork, but living as close as you can to your work and everyday needs will save you more than it costs in the long run. We managed to find an apartment that is surrounded by grocery stores, cafes…

When Simple isn’t Easy

Originally posted on Minimal Millennial:
Throughout the past few years, I’ve been moving towards a more simple life. I’m seeking less chaos, less clutter, less shopping, less spending, you get it – I want less so that I can have more of what really matters. More freedom, more mental space, more peace, more time. But that last one is interesting. What if simplifying leads us to do things…that take up more time? How simple can get complicated For starters, let’s make it clear: I don’t have any more hours in the day now than I did three years ago. None of us do. But I have found myself allocating those hours so differently these days, and not in ways you might expect. I clean more often (although it takes less time), I prepare food constantly (or at least it feels like I do), and I spend more time planning days than I have ever done before. So, what changed? Isn’t one of the driving factors of minimalism getting to the point of doing fewer chores? I think I figured it…

My Daily Bread // Family Chili Recipe.

It’s that time of year. Your Christmas tree is probably up, most of the Thanksgiving leftovers have been eaten through, and possibly, there’s a little bit of snow on the ground. For me, two of those things are true,?still no snow days for me yet! But even if none of those things are true, you cannot go wrong with chili. If I thought my last time in the kitchen was bad, then this time is in a category all it’s own. I have to admit, getting the hang of cooking is much harder than it looks! Getting all the right ingredients, preparing the food successfully, everything running smoothly, at the same/correct time, and then coming out deliciously? Much harder said then done. But, I learn something new every time. This time around I found out just how important it is to have simple recipes when you don’t cook often. One reason is, you will waste a ton of money on random ingredients that will end up going bad before you…

DIY: Updating Plastic Bins

Originally posted on The HardKnock Diaries:
Last week, I was in the process of moving out of my parent’s home for the first time. With the lack of space in my dorm, I needed drawer space that came on wheels and was easily accessible. To combat my problems, I decided to purchase plastic bins to hold all of my necessities. The only problem was the terribly ugly appearance and lack of privacy of the bins. Watch me transform my bins from… This: To This: What You’ll Need: Plastic bins or drawers Double Sided Tape (or an adhesive) Scissors Scrapbook Paper ( wrapping paper or liner can also be used) Steps: 1.) Measure your scrapbook paper against your plastic bins. I was lazy with this step, but you can certainly use a ruler if you like. 2.) Once, your paper is measured, put medium sized tape pieces along the four corners of the scrapbook paper. I have seen others actually cut a slit where the handle should go, but again I am lazy and this covering…
