How to be a Marginally Successful Freelance Writer

Whilst we all know freelance writers exist, becoming one sounds almost impossible. Surely being paid to work from home, never having to get out of your pajamas and effectively being able to stay in bed all day is too good to be true? Note: This article refers to non-fiction writing and is for people who want to be professional journalists, bloggers etc. Fiction writing is probably similar and some of these tips will still apply, but if fiction is your thing you will have a slightly different process. This also refers quite exclusively to online writing, journalism, blogging etc. My office The bad news Becoming an online freelance writer is easier than you think, but if you’re expecting immediate riches (or any substantial money at all for the first few months) then you’ll be disappointed. Unless you are very, very lucky you won’t instantly become a respected writer for a well-known website. Don’t expect regular wages When you do start getting paid (and you will if you keep at it) it won’t be a substantial …

I Don’t Want a Boyfriend: And Other Things I Shouldn’t Have to Explain

I’m in my early twenties, fairly fresh out of college, and in the early stages of my career. Those alone are great reasons to not want a boyfriend. I have a 60 hour a week job, a side hustle, and various side projects. Relationships can be a part time job. Do I sound like I need another job? Right now, why would I want a boyfriend? Most of the men I’ve met, that are in my age range still behave like teenage boys. I’m a grown woman with an “old soul.” If that’s what I have to choose from… I don’t want a boyfriend. I’m not a lesbian. I’m not asexual. I haven’t sworn off of men. However, at the moment, I do not want a boyfriend. ________________________ Aren’t you worried about when you’ll get married or have kids? No, I’m in my early twenties, not approaching menopause. What about other things, like buying a house? Why doesn’t your generation buy homes? It’s not from lack of desire. It’s from lack of money. You see, the way …

The Battle Between Quality & Quantity

Originally posted on Buitiful Confessions:
If I close my eyes tight enough, I can see back to that August night nearly nine years ago, when I sat with a group of my closest friends, hoping that the silence and our tear-filled eyes would keep us there in that very moment. We found out then that heavy hearts just don’t beat quietly, and when the silence broke, we did everything we could to bottle up all the last words that we said. Carrie Underwood was playing on repeat in the background, drowned out by the sound of desperate voices clinging onto our youth. And she says, ‘I don’t want this night to end, why does it have to end?’ We talked about all the ways we would keep in touch. We would write letters, send cards, mail each other care packages. We would have our own version of what the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants had. We calculated the miles between all of our colleges and mapped out the road trips we’d take. We made plans…

How to be a Productive Millennial

Entire seasons of TV shows being available on Netflix make it easier than ever to waste an entire Saturday. Checking e-mail and watching all of your friends’ Snapchat posts provide hours of entertainment. Boozy brunches and day parties can instantly ruin an entire weekend that was supposed to be dedicated to productivity. So how can you be a productive 20- to 30-something in today’s world? I am the queen of doing-too-much but I get THE most done throughout the week. At school I am president of the Black Graduate Student Association, planned a 50-person weekend ski trip this year, am involved in the Toastmasters public speaking group, travel to conferences for fun and for school, travel to visit family, and develop and teach coding camps to high school girls all while be productive on school work. My secret? Being organized. Google Calendar is my BFF. SHORT TERM: At the beginning of each day, I write on a sticky note (or sometimes am lazy/can’t find one and write in Notepad) the…

Not Enough Time in the World

Some of us were shoved out into the world with part of our egg shells stuck to our backs, not yet fully hatched. There is not enough time in the world for healing. There is not enough time in our lives to figure out what was and is being done to us; to figure out how much of it is self-victimizing and how much of it is true; or if the truth has forced us to become accustomed to being the victim. To then identify the great parts of who we are and discard the bad. To then take the bad and see how much of it is part of us. How much of it can we change when it’s the reason we have survived. To then re-define what “bad” is. There is not enough time to fix ourselves. While we are in a constant state of repair, those who were born with great families and good incomes are ruling the world. Their world. While we live in ours. While we wish for their lives. From…

Sunrise or Sunset?

Well, well, well, here you are again, reader. Did you come back because I said in my last post that I would be starting the writing prompts from 300 Writing Prompts? No? Well… That’s awkward… We’re just going to keep moving on here. For those of you who are just here by coincidence, here’s the short of it all. I bought a book of 300 writing prompts and I am trying to convince myself that I can make a powerful piece of writing out of all of them. And then I had a delusion that my readers would hold me accountable for all 300 of them. We’ll see. Anyways, after flipping through the book, the first one I chose to write about was this question: Which do you prefer, sunrise or sunset?  I am a Colorado native, our sunsets and sunrises are breathtaking. If I didn’t get to see at least one of them everyday, I would end up being a very grumpy soul. That being said, nothing is…
