For Us, For Them

My parents and long time boyfriends parents both came from dictatorships. They came to this country for a better life. When you are shaking in your sleep on the verge of tears and hear Trump supporters outside of your walls celebrating, fear feels like something you have to make friends with. I don’t want to become my parents who lived in so much fear that even once they moved to the U.S it was hard to talk about the past. Worried that someone might be listening and make them disappear. Straightening their hair to cover up their blackness in hopes of not being noticed. I do not want to and refuse to live my life that way. I will not be living in fear although it seems that now more than ever I will be living WITH it. America was always the girl who passively bullied us in school. Made us feel like we weren’t good enough and taunted us for the things we could never control, but would always say it was a joke…

Dealing with Race Relations as a Millennial: Why I appreciate the University of Oklahoma SAE video

Time and time again,  many people of color millennials have had to argue why we are not in a post-racial America. Granted, there are a few obvious occurrences, like racial profiling followed by police brutality, yet there are many that go unnoticed. Many of which take place on college campuses and in the work place. Let me make one thing clear, the statement that we are in a post-racial America has not only come from members of the majority, but also those that fall under the minority. I have heard this largely from elder people of color who feel that “my generation has no struggle.” This brings me to why I appreciate the SAE video. Numerous co-workers (including those of color) were surprised to see such behavior from a young generation. There are a variety of racial events that occurred on my college campus within the past five years (mind you, I’ve been an alum for one). What’sa Motto With You?

For those of you who are cultured, you know that line is from Lion King. If not, perhaps you’re familiar with the phrase Hakuna Matata (what a wonderful phrase). Hakuna Matata ain’t no passing craze. It means no worries, for the rest of your days. It’s my problem free philosophy. Hakuna Matata. I’m not sorry. I had to do it! A lot has happened in the past month. There have been race issues, nude photos leaking (gender issues), and inappropriate rape tweets (sexual issues). I’m going to keep my response short and simple. Why do these things matter? Race, gender, sexuality. Honestly, they shouldn’t. By that I mean, these are all important things. Many people have branches of their identity that stem from some or all of them. However, my race, gender, sexuality, and so forth should NOT BE A PROBLEM. They are not harmful to anyone and therefore should not be a problem. Perhaps the terms I’m putting this in are too simple, however I’m failing to understand any logic that claims they have the right to …
