Play Store vs Playground

There are at least three playgrounds within the immediate area of the condo I live in, with my husband. Every morning when I join the rest of the corporate zombies on the clogged-up highway, I pass two out of the three playgrounds. When I return from work, I pass by the third playground. Yet, these playgrounds are empty and completely devoid of children laughing and playing on them.

Why Did I Ever Stop Playing Video Games?

I used to be a pretty avid gamer. Honestly, Nintendo was my childhood. But around the same time I started watching too much TV, I stopped playing video games. Yes, a few times in the last year I’ve plugged in the old Nintendo 64 so I could play Kirby Crystal Shards, but that was more out of boredom than interest. Recently, I decided that I may be experiencing a slight quarter life crisis, and that I really missed being young. But not enough to do anything about it. Until I did. Two weekends ago at a garage sale, some rando was selling a copy of Pokémon White for $2. Yes, TWO DOLLARS. Though my Nintendo DS was in some forgotten box in the basement, and I hadn’t played a DS game in years, I wanted it. I couldn’t pass up that deal! So I bought it. And as soon as I got home,  I dug out my DS, popped in the game and started playing. I think I logged 10 hours that day. When my brother came into the room and saw me,…

My 20 Year Diary | Alana Hitchell

My name is Alana, and I’ve been writing in a diary for as long as I can remember.  I started in 1993 when I was eight years old and kept writing up until I was 28 in early 2014.  I didn’t write every single day, but I acquired plenty of diary entries over those 20 years that I thought would be fun to share.  I decided to start a blog and post each diary entry online, no matter how boring or mortifying they might be.  To make things a little more interesting, I also add photos and include present-day commentary where I provide explanations, observations, or simply poke fun at my younger self.

Coveted 90s Christmas Toys

It seems like everything from the 80s and 90s is getting a revival these days – from Full House to The X Files to Jem and the Holograms (although that didn’t go so well). There’s a rush of nostalgia going on right now, but it seems different to us millennials because it actually pertains to us. Instead of wearing 70s-inspired bell bottoms when we were in 7th grade, now we’re the ones who are rocking daisy print baby dolls dresses and jelly shoes. Yeah, I feel old too. In addition to fashion and entertainment, kids’ toys also somehow make a comeback, with things like Easy-Bake Ovens (which are weirdly futuristic looking now) and Puppy Surprises reappearing. In fact, the Puppy Surprise, you know that stuffed animal that’s holding an unknown number of baby puppies in its velcro sack, made a return last year, and it was so popular that the company had to stop airing commercials because the demand was so high. Easy-Bake Ovens and Puppy Surprises may have been coveted in the…

I might never get married. Who knows?! – 20th April 1998

Monday 20thP. [Period.] It’s scary how fast time seems to be going at the moment. It hardly seems any time at all since I first started school in Year 7 and now I’m in Year 10 and more than half way through. It seems ages away until my major GCSE exams but everything is going so quickly. Back at school today. Back to normal. Normal shouldn’t be being at school but term time is the way it is more than anything else and it’s the routine I’ve got used to. I’d rather we had more holidays, even with the boring bits. That’s one advantage about school – I never seem to get bored. I mean, I don’t like some of the lessons much but I’m always doing something. Then at lunch and break I can catch up on all the gossip or watch Ralph and co playing sad little ball games on the tennis courts. I suppose if we didn’t have school then I would never have known…

Things that make me happy Part 3 | Disney

I’ve been really struggling for ideas for lifestyle posts recently, but whilst watching some Disney World vlogs I had a sudden realisation I hadn’t posted about Disney at all really on my blog yet! I’m sure this is the same for most of you, but for me Disney really just symbolises my childhood and family memories in a nutshell. My brother and I were very lucky as my parents always took us to the cinema to watch the Disney films. They also took us on a few family holidays to Disney World in Florida, and Disneyland Paris – of which I have very fond memories. My brother and me, in Disney World back in good old days! In general Disney is one of those things that when I’m feeling sad or fed up, watching a Disney movie will always cheer me up. There’s nothing better than snuggling up to watch a Disney film in my onesie with a hot chocolate. I love the Disney classics but I’ve also learned to love…
